What is Light Therapy?
When specific wavelengths of light energy enter the skin it travels via neurological pathways to specific cells in the skin to improve cellular performance.
Light therapy is non-invasive, painless, requires no recovery time, and can be used on all skin types.
How does it work?
Using proven wavelengths of light triggers a natural bio stimulatory effect in human tissue. Research has shown that phototherapy with specific wavelengths can increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, kill acne bacteria decrease inflammation, improve skin tone, texture & clarity, as well as ease muscle & joint pain, stiffness, spasm & arthritis..
LED Light therapy's main method of action is to activate mitochondria at a cellular level via a photochemical reaction. Light wavelengths affect bodily cells on a biochemical level by increasing mitochondrial function - the ability to produce cellular energy.
The more cellular energy production, the better the body functions as a whole.
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a key chemical found in all living cells. ATP governs how our cells use energy, this is a very important factor in cell metabolism. This increased energy stimulated by LED will prompt the skin's fibroblasts to produce collagen and stabilise elastin proteins along with stimulating a healing response, cellular activity,, DNA replication, regeneration, healing, neurotransmission, and muscle contraction.
What is the research on it?
LED therapy was originally developed by NASA to aid wound healing in space, including the prevention of bone and muscle atrophy.
Studies conducted by NASA lab concluded that LED provided would healing and human tissue growth as well as stimulate basic energy processess in cells.
Optimal LED wavelengths were shown to be between 600nm & 880nm.
NASA found the synthesis of fibroblasts and muscle cells had been increased fivefold.
Simply put, LED light source provides compromised cells with added energy so the performance of the cells is enhanced.
How do home versions differ?
The amount of energy and intensity determines the amount of light delivered into the skin. Intensity is important in clinical applications because this allows for shorter treatment time, while a lower intensity will have a much longer treatment time. For example, those suitable for home use will require a longer treatment time and more sessions to produce the same result. Some LED home masks have about the same amount of energy ass fairy lights or traffic lights. We don't utilise these for our skin because the energy and intensity aren't sufficient. Whilst some on the market will work, the intensity is still low enough that it would require lengthy sessions under the light and multiple sessions to see the benefit.

The importance of wavelength and depth of penetration
Light waves or colors are measured in nanometres (nm).
Red (633nm) & near-infrared light (830nm) are able to penetrate tissue more effectively than other wavelengths as they have a lower frequency.
Wavelengths shorter than 630nm such as yellow, green, and blue have a higher frequency and do not penetrate as deep. Which color is used is an important factor in determining which result you will achieve.
